Eastern A Week in Review: Chasing Cheverus

John Wolfgram sat down directly in front of the booth at the Oxford Hills/Lewiston game Friday night. Holding a tape recorder (yes, an actual cassette tape recorder, look it up kids), he dictated something into it after each play run, as both the Vikings and Devils will be on the Stags schedule (Lewiston hosts Cheverus this Friday night on Z105.5, by the way). It was a stark reminder why Coach Wolfgram is the bar all other high school football coaches in this state are measured by, and he shows no signs of slowing down. It’s also a reminder, after Cheverus took advantage of Portland miscues in a 41-3 win last Saturday, why everyone is still chasing Cheverus in Eastern A.

If Cheverus is the number one team in Eastern A, the tier below them trying to catch them isn’t separated by much. Portland actually looked very good in the first half, pushing Cheverus around a little, Windham opened some eyes with a rout of Deering, while Bangor dispatched EL one year after struggling against them at home. Oxford Hills, coming off a season they’d like to forget, looked very strong in their win over Lewiston and look like they are ready to join the next tier.

“Our numbers are up,” said Oxford Hills coach Mark Soehren before Friday’s game. “Weight room participation was very good. (Senior) Davis Turner hasn’t missed a lift.”

Turner had four touchdowns Friday, three of them rushing, the other a game changing 97 yard interception return. He’s your Eastern A Player of the Week in week one.

“I just want to get better and play college football,” said Turner after the game. His older brother Dexter does that just that at UMaine, but he’s currently rehabbing a knee injury that will cause this season to be a redshirt year. He was on the sidelines at the Gouin Athletic Complex Friday night, in crutches and full knee brace, cheering on the alma mater.

Must be why Davis never misses a lift.
